Hawaii's Topciment Distributor

When I have designed and remodelled high end residences on Maui, I have often noticed how even the most expensive tile and natural stone becomes quickly discoloured with the color of ‘Maui Mud’ (especially the grout lines between tile).

This led me to look into a hard-wearing seamless bathroom finishes with a natural and organic look.

As part of this journey I discovered microcement - a beautiful and durable product for seamless installations.

Fast forward a few years and SwiftsDesign is Hawaii’s exclusive distributor for TOPCIMENT MICROCEMENT.

I have now used microcement on various projects - both residential and commercial - where it continues to stand the test of time, and deliver a timeless and beautiful aesthetic.

What Is Microcement?

Microcement is a premium, ultra-thin decorative coating—typically just 2–3 mm thick—composed of cement, water-based resins, additives, and mineral pigments (Topciment). It’s designed for seamless application over existing surfaces, transforming them with clean, contemporary aesthetics and unmatched durability.

How Is It Applied?

The application process involves careful surface preparation (ensuring dryness, solidity, and low humidity), fine trowel work, and sealing with varnish for protection and waterproofing.

Unlike paint or tile, microcement is a complete system. Each stage of application builds on the previous one, ensuring the final surface is not only beautiful, but also durable, waterproof, and long-lasting.

1. Surface Preparation

Every installation begins with careful prep:

  • The substrate must be clean, solid, and free from dust, grease, or loose material.

  • Cracks or irregularities are repaired to ensure stability.

  • On porous or uneven surfaces, we apply a primer to promote adhesion and regulate absorption.

2. Base Layers (Microbase)

  • The first coat is a microcement base layer, applied with a steel trowel.

  • This layer provides strength, levels the surface, and creates the foundation for the decorative coats.

  • For added durability, a fiberglass mesh may be embedded between coats, especially on floors and high-traffic areas.

3. Decorative Coats (Microfino / Microdeck / Specialized Finishes)

  • Once the base cures, we apply two thin coats of the selected finishing microcement—whether for walls (Microfino), floors (Microdeck), wet areas, or exterior systems.

  • Each layer is carefully troweled and allowed to dry before the next application.

  • This stage defines the final color, texture, and movement of the surface, giving it the handcrafted, seamless look microcement is known for.

4. Sanding and Detailing

  • Between coats, the surface is lightly sanded to remove imperfections and achieve a smooth, even finish.

  • This ensures the final look is consistent, while still retaining the organic character of hand-applied material.

5. Sealing (Varnishes & Topcoats)

  • Once the decorative coats cure, the entire surface is sealed with specialized polyurethane varnishes.

  • Depending on the environment, sealers can provide matte, satin, or gloss finishes.

  • The sealing system is critical—it makes microcement waterproof, stain-resistant, and easier to clean, while also enhancing durability.

6. Curing and Protection

  • After sealing, the surface is left to cure. Within a few days it’s walkable, but full hardness develops over the following weeks.

  • During this time, we recommend protecting the surface from heavy impact, standing water, or abrasive cleaning.

Is it a product or a system?

Because microcement is only a few millimeters thick, its performance depends entirely on the layered system. Skipping steps—or using inferior products—risks adhesion issues, cracking, or staining. By using the complete Topciment system, every layer works together: primers, base coats, finishes, and sealers are designed to bond and perform as one.

Where Can It Be Used?

Microcement thrives in both indoor and outdoor environments, offering a continuous, jointless finish that’s easy to clean—ideal for hygienic and high-traffic spaces (Topciment).

Applications include:

  • Floors & Walls: Smooth, durable surfaces for living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and commercial spaces (Topciment).

  • Bathrooms & Kitchens: Water-resistant and stain-free surfaces that resist moisture and are simple to maintain (Topciment).

  • Stairs: Sleek, continuous stair coverings—though they require skilled application (Topciment).

  • Pools & Pool Surrounds: Safe, non-slip, water-resistant finishes designed for wet environments (Topciment, Facebook).

  • Exteriors: Terraces, patios, and facades benefit from UV-resistant, seamless coatings (Topciment).

  • Ceilings & Furniture: Microcement can even be applied to furniture and ceilings for a unified, contemporary look (Topciment).

what are the advantages of microcement?

  • Seamless, continuous finish—no joints, no dirt traps, resulting in hygienic, easy-to-clean surfaces (Topciment).

  • Remarkable resistance to foot traffic, impact, scratches, chemicals, and moisture (Topciment).

  • Ultra-thin application (2–3 mm) doesn’t alter floor levels or structural loads (Topciment).

  • Fast and clean installation: Minimal demolition, no rubble, quicker project turnaround (Topciment).

  • Versatile decorative finishes: Wide palette of textures, colors (including metallic and tadelakt appearances), and sealers (Topciment).

  • Eco-friendly: Low thickness equals minimal materials; many systems feature low VOCs and natural components (Topciment).

  • Easy maintenance: Clean with water and neutral pH soap; Topciment also offers biodegradable cleaning products for enhanced care (Topciment).

  • Supports radiant heating and adapts to temperature fluctuations when installed correctly (Topciment).

  • Hygienic: Jointless surfaces reduce germs and bacteria accumulation (Topciment).

what are the Compatible Surfaces for it to be applied on?

Microcement bonds exceptionally well to a variety of substrates, including:

  • Tiles, marble, terrazzo, cement, concrete, self-leveling mortars, plasterboard, and plaster (Topciment).

  • Note: Avoid application directly over natural wood or flexible parquet unless removed or properly prepared (Topciment).

  • Note: Whilst the system is water resistant, we always recommend installing on top of a fully waterproofed base layer if you will be using this in a wet area like a bathroom or shower. This is the same preparation as a tiled wetroom - and the preparation should be completed by a licensed contractor (Topciment).

WHAT DOES IT Cost? (HawaiI)

Each project is unique, and increased complexity can increase the labor time of install. Because of the number of layers required in the system, the product has a higher labour cost than material cost. The below breakdown shows what our most recent projects have cost, as a reference:

  • We recommend to budget for approximately $25-$35/sq ft

  • Materials: Approximately $5 per sq ft, plus shipping and import (usually around $2k)

  • Installation (labor): Around $20–30 per sq ft

These rates reflect material costs and installation complexities; final pricing will vary depending on project scope, microcement type, surface prep, and shipping logistics to Hawaii. For each project, we can provide accurate materials and shipping estimates tailored to your specific needs. Labor is completed on an hourly basis, and as no two projects are the same. Projects are charged on a cost-plus basis.
